My Mother’s Garden

Today is my Mum’s birthday.  I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give her the kudos she deserves by sharing a little bit about her.  One of my favourite photos from childhood is me sitting in amongst a beautiful bed of Dahlias on Mum’s knee.  We are both looking very pleased with ourselves and have often joked down through the years that that was when we started Glorious Gardens, the business she operates to this day.  We have a strong family tradition of horticulture on Mum’s side, and it is her and my Grandmother who taught me lots of the tips and tricks of gardening, and more importantly passed on the passion.  I feel very lucky that Mum and I still share this passion.  Aside from the gardens we have planted and maintained for our lovely customers, she has also developed 3 wonderful gardens over the last 10 years at her homes in Greenlane and now Freeman’s Bay.  We have had so much enjoyment out of these, whether it is watching the kids play, eating the delicious fruit, or whiling away the hours with good wine and conversation.  So thanks Mum, I look forward to many more years of your wonderful company, support, and sage advice.  The following poem is by Debra Rich.

My Mother kept a garden.
A garden of the heart;
She planted all the good things,
That gave my life its start.

She turned me to the sunshine,
And encouraged me to dream:
Fostering and nurturing
The seeds of self-esteem.

And when the winds and rains came,
She protected me enough;
But not too much, she knew I’d need
To stand up strong and tough.

Her constant good example,
Always taught me right from wrong;
Markers for my pathway
To last my whole life long.

I am my Mother’s garden,
I am her legacy.
And I hope today she feels the love,
Reflected back from me.
