California Dreaming
May 9th, 2014
Today was spent on the slopes of Sandringham / Mt Roskill. I really like the view of the city skyline and volcanic cones from this northern side of Mt Albert Road. We created a cactus and succulent garden – a 3.0m long concrete planter box which, with its sheltered northerly aspect by the front door of a modernised bungalow, was crying out for an eye-catching feature garden. After a long tussle with the well established Agave attenuata, we finally had the box empty and ready to start from scratch. The homeowner had visited Coromandel Cacti in Mt Wellington after I provided him with a sketch plan. I was impressed when I picked up the order today, not only with the superb plant quality but great service too. While I was there we discussed the Huntington Gardens in California, where the Golden Barrel Cactus is a stunning part of the desert gardens – check it out, awesome.
Green feature stones and white Awarua pebbles tone with the house colour and plant palette. Once this garden grows it will be a real statement. Now we just need to remember the tweezers when we come to do the maintenance – sharp!
