Knight in Shining Armour
September 15th, 2014Spring is here again and, as I am every year, I’m captivated by the emerging flowers of the spectacular Poor Knights lily. Rugged, adaptable, tolerant and good looking heroes of the human variety may be few and far between, but this plant fits all these criteria and more. Planted in a very free draining soil, under eaves, or in a pot it will thrive on neglect, requiring feeding only occasionally. The best plants are available from Tawapou Coastal Natives near the Poor Knights Islands, where these beauties originate. They take a while to flower, but prior to this are still extremely attractive, especially when paired with other natives as pictured.
